Free Emergency
Contraception
Emergency contraception (EC) prevents pregnancy before it starts by stopping or delaying ovulation. EC cannot cause abortion and is not the same thing as abortion medication. The sooner it is taken, the better it is at preventing pregnancy. Consider keeping doses of oral EC on hand before you need it. EC is safe to use and does not affect future fertility.

Is cost a barrier to getting emergency contraception?
Did you know that all University of Utah affiliated pharmacies are now offering oral emergency contraception free of charge for those who need help in affording this medication? This includes options like Plan B (used within 3 days of unprotected intercourse) or Ella (used within 5 days of unprotected intercourse).
How can I get free emergency contraception?
For more information on getting free emergency contraception in Utah, visit a University of Utah Pharmacy today! Proof of income is not required to receive no-cost emergency contraception.
Note that Ella requires a prescription. Ella can also be requested through myChart
Can I use MyChart to request free EC?
Yes! If you have never been seen at the University of Utah Health System, you can create a MyChart account online to request EC. After logging into your account, select “Emergency Contraception” from the left-side menu. This will direct you to a form to complete your request. You may request up to 3 doses each of ella® and Plan B®. These will be filled as a prescription and available for pickup at any University of Utah Pharmacy or through mail-order for non-urgent requests. All requests will be provided free of cost to patients through the Free EC program.
